![]() Charles Francis HallHall was an American explorer of the Arctic. In the 1860s, he made two notable—but mostly unsuccessful—searches for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. In 1871, he attempted to reach the North Pole. Though he set a new northern record, he died suddenly before reaching the pole. Later, 19 members of his crew became stranded on an ice floe for several months before being rescued. Two days later, US boats were supposedly attacked again without provocation. La Negrita is a statue of the Virgin Mary carved in dark wood, which is how La Negrita ("little dark one") earned its name. It is housed in the Basilica Virgen de Los Angeles in Cartago, next to a small stream. People from all over the country come to Cartago on August 2 to celebrate the mass at the Basilica, pray to Little Negrita, and collect water from the stream.
