The Beach Pneumatic Transit

The first to attempt to build an underground public transit system in New York City was undertaken by inventor Alfred Ely Beach in 1869. Though it was operational within a year, the Beach Pneumatic Transit Company's 312-ft- (95-m-) long pneumatic subway line beneath Broadway remained little more than a curiosity and soon closed. How did the construction of the complex lead to the expansion of the island of Manhattan? More...

His electric blues influenced myriad musicians, including Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. What world-famous band took its name from one of his songs? More...
Quotation of the Day
It is a delicious thing to write, to be no longer yourself but to move in an entire universe of your own creating. Today, for instance, as man and woman, both lover and mistress, I rode in a forest on an autumn afternoon under the yellow leaves, and I was also the horses, the leaves, the wind, the words my people uttered, even the red sun that made them almost close their love-drowned eyes.

Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880)

The Great Falls Ski Club Mannequin Jump is held on the first Saturday in April at the Showdown Ski Area in Montana.
