Eruption Columns

Visually similar to nuclear mushroom clouds, eruption columns are massive plumes of hot ash produced during explosive volcanic eruptions. In extreme cases, eruption columns may rise over 25 miles (40 km), penetrating the stratosphere and causing short-term climate change, like the drop in global temperature that followed the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Mercurius becomes Pope John II (533 CE)

Though Catholics today are accustomed to the pope taking a new name once elected, Mercurius was the first to do so. As his birth name honored the pagan god Mercury, he chose to become John II upon elevation to the papacy. Mehmed was deposed after a Turkish defeat by Charles V of Lorraine. Who succeeded him? More...
Quotation of the Day
The woods are never solitary—they are full of whispering, beckoning, friendly life. But the sea is a mighty soul, forever moaning of some great, unshareable sorrow, which shuts it up into itself for all eternity…The woods call to us with a hundred voices, but the sea has one only—a mighty voice that drowns our souls in its majestic music. The woods are human, but the sea is of the company of the archangels.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942)
